Livingstone Park Loop 1 km
(20 - 30 minutes)
Once bustling with miners engaged in panning, sluicing, and dredging for gold, Livingstone Park has transformed into a serene recreational haven. Today, it features picnic and barbecue areas, a playground, a creek swimming hole, and a network of walking trails that meander throughout the park.
This natural retreat is just steps away from the Notebook Haus. To start your adventure, simply leave the house, turn right onto Creek Street, and begin the Livingstone Park Loop at the information board. Cross the charming little bridge over the creek and follow the path toward the rotunda. From there, follow the signs to Baker’s Island. When you reach the fork in the trail, take the left path and ascend to a viewpoint that overlooks the Griffith Tunnel on one side and the swimming hole on the other.
The 20-meter tail race and 75-meter tunnel were excavated by Griffiths and his team in 1868 to facilitate mining in Livingstone Creek without the interference of flowing water. This impressive structure was carved through the high rocky bluff known as Frenchman’s Hill, allowing the miners to rework a significant portion of the creek bed.
To complete your loop, return to the car park by descending the steps to the swimming hole, then follow the path straight ahead to the bridge across the creek. You can also access the Oriental Claims Reserve from this walk. We are fortunate to offer such convenient facilities right at your doorstep, enhancing your stay with us.
Oriental Claims Historic Area
Starting at the Oriental Claims picnic area, cross the bridge over the creek and turn left. The track is well marked and signs along the way give interesting facts about the people who worked here, especially Ah Fong, whom this walk is named after. "Ah Fong became wealthy with his mining ventures, and then decided it was much easier running a shop adjacent to the Chinese - and then sent his wife out to work his claim!" The landscape was dramatically impacted by the method of gold extraction they used here called hydraulic sluicing. Along the walk the scenery and altitude varies because of this. The beautiful Livingstone River is by your side as you loop back towards the car park providing another quiet and scenic picnic spot.
